When The Drugs Don't Work Try This Album
This is undoubtedly one of the best albums of the 90's. It contains two megahits - Bitter Sweet Symphony and The Drugs Don't Work. The latter I consider to be one of the best love songs ever recorded. Few other songs also rate very high - Sonet, Lucky Man, Space and Time and Velvet Morning. The album is very consistent with an excellent sound, brilliant lead vocal by Richard Ashcroft and gentle and often psychedelic guitar by Nick McCabe. Ashcroft, an author of most of the songs, is at its peak as a songwriter. His songs at Urban Hymns are better than on the two previous Verve albums. He can write the most passionate and tender lyrics and then deliver them in his original way.The Verve only recorded three albums, each of them better than the previous one. Urban Hymns is the last one after which the band broke up. If you like Urban Hymns then I recommend to go back and listen to the previous one called A Northern Soul (the song History itself is worth the money). Ashcroft's solo...

This Will Stand the Test of Time
This is one of those timeless albums that you can listen to now (six years after its initial release) and still enjoy it. Each of the songs still sound as fresh as today as they did back in 1997. With this album, the Verve hit a homerun. I remember I was browsing through a CD store when I first heard "Bittersweet Symphony." It immediately caught my attention, and I stood rooted on the spot just listening. Very few times has an album jolted me like that, but this was one of those times. I asked the clerk who this was and he said that it was from the new album by The Verve. After "Bittersweet" was over, he told me to hold on and listen to "Lucky Man." It was after that I was sold -- I had to buy the album. On this album, you get 13 little masterpieces -- there's not a filler track in the bunch. Besides the excellent songwriting, the production is outstanding. I haven't heard such a good mix of strings since Tony Visconti's work with T. Rex...

5 stars isn't enough...
What else can you say? "Bittersweet Symphony"--an instant classic. "Sonnet"-a great ballad in the words of Noel Gallagher, and mine. "Rolling People"--rocks you throughout. "Drugs don't work"--I cry every time. "Catching the Butterfly"--a chilled out jam. "Neon Wilderness"--a nice come down. "Space and Time"--reminds me of Revolver-style song crafting. "Weeping willow"--melancholia at it's best. "Lucky man"--my personal anthem, along with everyone else in the UK. "This time"--sums up my feelings about life. "Velvet morning"--describes that feeling you get when you wake up after the long evening. "Come on"--Rock anthem for the ages. Totally solid album that has remained in my personal top 3 rotation since it debuted in 1997. My pick for album of the year in 97, and probably in my top 2 of the decade with the Pumpkin's "Siamese Dream"...

The song the world loves.
This has been my favorite song for almost 15 years. It's one of the most powerful and honest songs ever made. It's been used in powerful moments of cinema and other media (like the ending of Cruel Intentions), and still gets consistent radio play. It was an instant classic and will always be one of the world's favorite songs, as it speaks right to your soul and knows exactly what you're going through.

Great song, great price
This is one of those songs from my Teen years that really stuck with me and it was great to discover it here DRM free.Now, a review on this service. I am a huge apple fan and for that reason I'm extatic that they finally have some direct competition. They seem to thrive when they have serious competition and Amazon has done a great job at providing this (at least on the music side of things, don't get me started on their TV show and movie crap player). I of course own a mac and after downloading the utility and installing it (all went flawlessly), I purchased this song for $.89. It downloading very quickly and magically appeared in iTunes with album art and all. The only difference from iTunes is that the song is not restricted and it wasn't automatically in my purchased smart folder, but I just drug it into the folder and the problem was easily solved. Great job Amazon! Can't wait to see if Apple responds and how.

Yes, this is music.
Many stateside listeners know The Verve only from the song "Bittersweet Symphony," or perhaps the album Urban Hymns. For these listeners, there is a wealth of great music to be found on this greatest hits album. Songs such as "This is Music" and "History" are easily on par with the better known tracks from Urban Hymns, such as the gems "The Drugs Don't Work" and "Lucky Man." Fans will surely have favorite songs that didn't meet the "singles" requirement for inclusion on this album. For me, "So Sister" would have completed this 5 Star effort. However, it's pretty safe to say that this is the best of The Verve, and therefore some of the best music around. If you already own all of these tracks then you might be dissapointed with this package--there are two new tracks, but no live or rare material (thus, the label "Singles"). Still worth the price of admission for Verve fans.

Best British band since Echo & the Bunnymen / Smiths heyday
The title of my review is not meant as a put down of, say, Radiohead, Blur, Suede, Oasis, etc.(all worthy bands); but, IMHO this single disc overview of the Verve's output is terrific for both the general enthusiast of great Britpop, as well as those who have the other Verve c.d.'s. (The 2 unreleased tracks are also very good.)

One of the best bands in "History".
This is one of the few bands that I feel I've been actually lucky to have gotten to know. Once you just sit and listen to them, and the music grabs you, it's a beautiful thing. This is a great singles collection, and includes most of the essential tunes from "Urban Hymns", the excellent "History" and "On Your Own" from the "A Northern Soul" album, "Blue", and some amazing extras. Had this been a "best of", I would have also wanted "Already There" and "One Day", but it can't have it all. Also, the booklet doesn't really say anything about the songs, or which album they came from, it's mostly just pictures. Overall, the most I can really say, is that he who listens to The Verve, is a "Lucky Man".

A Triumphant Return!
A Masterpiece Revival for a group that clearly creates something special when they get together. Regardless of the relationship between Richard and Nick, they make otherworldly good music in collaboration. Singles are surely "Love Is Noise" and "Sit and Wonder"--with strong guitar lines, exploding rhythms and Ashcroft's vocal instrument at the top of its game with rises and falls and memorable lyrical work. Other highlights include "Rather Be", "Judas" and "Valium Skies". I was lucky enough to see them live in NYC in the early summer and now I am just thankful the album finally came together--it was well worth the wait. I could go on and on with a deep analysis of Richard's introspection, soul-searching, life-wondering--as well as the evolved musicianship of the band, but I will leave that to your own discovery. They have again created something timeless but contemporary that rivals even, dare I say, "A Northern Soul" or "Urban Hymns". In sum, thank you to the band, Forth is gold in...

Something happens when the Verve are together that none of them experience when they are apart. Individually, the Verve are all highly-accomplished players. Singer Richard Ashcroft has been called the greatest singer in the world by no less a peer than Coldplay s Chris Martin. Liverpool-born Simon Jones s dub-informed bass takes the Verve s music far beyond rock and into space and dub; Peter Salisbury plays drums more like a jazz great than a conventional rock drummer and when the tag guitarist of his generation is thrown about it often lands at the feet of the hugely adventurous, psychedelic, exploratory Nick McCabe. However, when they are together a chemistry takes hold that transcends the four people onstage to blast the Verve somewhere else entirely and this chemistry and spontaneity has survived an absence of almost a decade. Already, since their typically unpredictable 2007 reunion, live shows have been running the gauntlet of everything from material so new that Ashcroft has been singing the words from scraps of paper to long-lost, hazy B-sides like Let The Damage Begin and A Man Called Sun, amid all manner of musical fireworks. When they take the stage, literally anything can happen.
After an absence of almost a decade, these songs are again being played, as they should be by the Verve themselves. The individual members have not been slouches. Richard Ashcroft has enjoyed a successful and prolific solo career. Simon Jones formed a band, the Shining, who were not altogether dissimilar to the Verve, and has played with Damon Albarn s Gorillaz. Nick McCabe has been remixing and playing with everyone from the Beta Band to John Martyn while Peter Salisbury has been playing with Ashcroft, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and has further diverted his musical obsessions into running a Stockport drum shop. However, all seem to have realized what their enormous fanbase has been telling them all along. That today, as much if not more than ever, music really needs the Verve.
However, a band like the Verve would never settle for easy nostalgia. Even before they d set out on their initial comeback gigs last year, which sold out within an astonishing 20 minutes, they made public (via the NME website) the results of their very first jam session as a reformed band. The Thaw Sessions comprised 14 wondrous minutes of music, which signified their ability to spark off one another remained undimmed. Soon afterwards, the band debuted new song Sit And Wonder a tune trimmed from a 25-minute jam, just as they would in the early days, a taste of things to come. Those comeback dates proved so successful and were so enthusiastically received that the band immediately embarked on a full-scale tour of arenas in December of 2007, playing bigger gigs in many cases than the first time around. In 2008, they look set to up the ante even further, by appearing at many of the major festivals and, in a turnaround that would have seemed unthinkable even a year ago, releasing their enormously-anticipated fourth album. Doesnt beat Urban Hymns but good nonetheless
Most "reunion" CD's are disappointing and many are downright terrible. Verve breaks the trend by offering 10 tracks that range from good to great. Most tracks are closer to "good," but there's no denying that this CD stands fine along side with Verve's 3 CD's from the 90's. If anything the tracks we get this time are more akin to their first "shoegazer" CD "Storm in Heaven," than the 2 later "rock" albums. Most of the tracks are quiet and long length and often have a nice (to me at least) bassy drone sound. Melodies are less constantly present but they are there. The studio production quality is uniformly excellent.If you're not a fan of Verve, this is not the first CD to buy. Get Urban Hymns first if you're curious about the band. Also if you can find their recent Glastonbury 2008 concert on video, it is worth it. They peform the "hits" plus "Love is Noise" and they play in truly excellent form.

Enough with comparing it to Urban Hymns already!!
I realize after reading many of these reviews that you are younger than me and did not get introduced to Verve's music until Urban Hymns. I am a 38 year old man who was 23 at the time when in '93, these outrageous wall to wall, full flanger, Chorus pedals on 10 echoing sounds were coming from the second stage at Lollapalooza in New Jersey. I was wandering away from the first stage while Arrested Development were playing and was drawn to the majestic sounds. For the next forty minutes or so, I and just a 100 more were fixated on the tranquility this band bestowed upon us. It was an unbelievable experience. Of course, the band was Verve. all the music played was from A Storm in Heaven. I made sure I owned that tape (yes, tape! ) before I went back to college. I must have played that tape in my dorm room endlessly that semester. To this day, THAT album is monumental. Yes, The Verve changed, and it wasn't a bad change but when I think of where The Verve really peaked, it was actually...
